Nigeria for Women Project (NFWP): How Nigerian Women Can Access Livelihood Grants and Business Support

The Nigeria for Women Project (NFWP) is a Federal Government-led–led women empowerment programme designed to help Nigerian women grow their income, improve business skills, and strengthen community support systems. The project focuses on women who are already working or running small businesses but need support to move forward.

Supported by the World Bank, the NFWP works at the community level, helping women access training, savings opportunities, and livelihood grants through organised groups.

If you are looking for women empowerment programs in Nigeria that go beyond talk and focus on real livelihoods, this is one opportunity to pay attention to.

What the Nigeria for Women Project Offers

The NFWP is not a cash giveaway. It is a structured programme that helps women build sustainable income sources over time.

Key benefits include:

  • Practical business and financial skills training

  • Support to improve existing small businesses

  • Access to livelihood grants (after meeting programme requirements)

  • Group savings and financial inclusion support

  • Strong community networks through Women Affinity Groups

The goal is to help women earn more, manage money better, and support one another within their communities.

Who the Programme Is For

The Nigeria for Women Project is designed for economically active women who are already doing something to earn income, even on a small scale.

Examples of supported businesses include:

  • Trading and petty commerce

  • Tailoring and fashion services

  • Hairdressing and beauty services

  • Small-scale farming and agro-processing

  • Food processing and catering

  • Artisan and craft work

  • Group-based agricultural or processing activities

If you are already working but struggling with capital, skills, or growth, the programme is meant for you.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the NFWP grant for women in Nigeria, you must:

  • Be a woman aged 18 years or above

  • Be economically active (already running or engaged in a small business)

  • Live in a participating state or local government area

  • Be willing to join or form a Women Affinity Group

  • Participate in group meetings, training, and savings activities

✅ Important:
There is no application or registration fee at any stage.

What Are Women Affinity Groups (WAGs)

Women Affinity Groups are the foundation of the Nigeria for Women Project.

A Women’s Affinity Group is a community-based group where women:

  • Save money together

  • Attend training sessions

  • Support one another’s businesses

  • Qualify collectively for programme benefits

Participation in a group is mandatory. The programme does not support individuals outside these groups because the group system:

  • Encourages accountability

  • Builds financial discipline

  • Strengthens community support

  • Improves access to grants and training

Women who are active in their groups benefit more over time.

NFWP Grant Details

The NFWP grant is provided as livelihood support, not free cash.

In previous phases:

  • Individual grants ranged from about ₦30,000 to ₦60,000, depending on the state and phase

  • Some Women Affinity Groups received larger group-based funding for collective businesses or revolving savings

Grant access depends on:

  • Training participation

  • Active group involvement

  • Savings behaviour

  • Meeting programme milestones

This approach ensures the funds are used to strengthen businesses and income, not spent without impact.
