FG Partners International Institute of Tropical Agriculture to Train 6 Million Nigerian Youth in Modern Agriculture

The Federal Government has launched a new programme to train more than six million young Nigerians in modern agriculture and agribusiness. The initiative follows a partnership between the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, described the collaboration as an important step toward raising a new generation of skilled young farmers and agribusiness owners across the country.

Under the programme, selected National Youth Development Centres will be converted into Agriculture Hubs under the Youth in Agriculture Programme. These hubs will serve as centres for training, food production, innovation, and market access. The initiative also supports the Ministry’s One Youth, Two Skills agenda, which is focused on helping young people gain practical skills for employment and business.

Young participants will receive hands-on training in modern and climate-smart agriculture. The programme will also introduce digital tools and technology in farming and agribusiness. Beyond teaching farming methods, the goal is to equip youth with business knowledge and practical skills that will help them build sustainable enterprises.

Before the official launch, the Minister visited Ibadan in Oyo State to meet with IITA and finalize discussions on the partnership. He explained that agriculture remains one of Nigeria’s strongest sectors for job creation, food production, and economic growth.

He added that young people should not only benefit from government programmes but also play active roles in improving productivity and innovation within the agricultural value chain. The programme is designed to help youth start and grow businesses, increase food supply, and contribute to national development.

The initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It will involve collaboration with state governments, development partners, research institutions, and private sector organisations to ensure participation across the country.

With over 60 percent of Nigeria’s population made up of young people, the government believes agriculture offers strong opportunities for employment and enterprise development. Through structured training, improved access to land, and exposure to modern farming methods, the programme aims to support youth-led agricultural businesses and strengthen Nigeria’s food system.
