The Federal Government has flagged off Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Abuja under its Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) Project.

The programme is aimed at equipping Nigerian youths with practical skills and helping more young people move into work or self-employment.

The IDEAS Project is supported by the World Bank and implemented by the Federal Ministry of Education.

About the IDEAS Project

The IDEAS Project focuses on improving technical education across Nigeria.

It is designed to:

  • Promote industry-relevant skills

  • Improve the quality of training centres

  • Encourage entrepreneurship

  • Support young people who are not in school, work, or training

The goal is to help youths gain skills that can translate into real income.

Flag-Off Ceremony in Abuja

The flag-off ceremony took place at Government Secondary School, Area 10, Garki, Abuja.

Speaking at the event, World Bank Education Specialist, Dr. Mistura Rufai, encouraged participants to stay committed and make good use of the opportunity.

She explained that while organisers will provide technical support and training resources, the outcome depends on the effort of each trainee.

According to her, training should not end at completion. What matters most is how participants use the skills after the programme.

Focus on Entrepreneurship

Dr. Rufai advised trainees to build an entrepreneurial mindset alongside technical skills.

She noted that many young people in Nigeria are currently not in education, employment, or any skill training. The programme is structured to support this group and help them gain direction.

Organisers stressed that the training is a process that requires discipline, consistency, and personal effort.

Six-Month Training with Monthly Stipends

Chairman of the Organising Committee of the IDEAS/TVET Programme in Abuja, Dr. Raphael Prince, said the training will last for six months.

He disclosed that participants are receiving monthly stipends to cover feeding and transportation during the training period.

At the end of the programme, trainees are expected to receive empowerment support to help them begin practice or small-scale business operations.

33 Training Centres Across the FCT

According to Dr. Prince, there are 33 training centres across different skills within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Some centres have been allocated:

  • 50 slots

  • 100 slots

  • 150 slots and above

This structure allows more young people in Abuja and surrounding communities to participate in the programme.

What Interested Youths Should Know

Young people in the FCT who want to benefit from similar programmes should:

  • Monitor announcements from the Federal Ministry of Education

  • Check accredited TVET centres within their area

  • Prepare required documents early

  • Confirm eligibility criteria before applying

Government-backed skills programmes often have limited slots, so early preparation is important.

Conclusion

The IDEAS TVET training in Abuja adds to ongoing efforts to strengthen technical education in Nigeria.

With structured training, stipends, and entrepreneurship focus, participants have an opportunity to gain skills that can lead to steady income.
