Growing Interest in Digital Skills Among Nigerian Youths

Across Nigeria, digital skills training programmes have continued to attract massive attention from young people searching for job opportunities, remote work, internships, and freelance income.

Many graduates and undergraduates now see technology as one of the few sectors still creating opportunities despite the country’s difficult economic situation.

In recent months, social media platforms have been filled with discussions around software development, cybersecurity, data analysis, artificial intelligence, and remote jobs, especially among Nigerian youths looking to earn online or secure international opportunities.

Some young Nigerians who reacted online described the fellowship as an opportunity to gain skills that could improve their chances of financial independence.

A graduate identified as Favour wrote on X:

“Honestly, many Nigerian youths are tired of waiting for jobs that are not coming. Learning a digital skill now feels more important than ever.”

Another user posted:

“If the government is offering free tech training, people should take advantage of it because tech skills can actually change lives.”

Others also expressed interest in learning skills that could help them work remotely or build independent careers online.

What the 3MTT NextGen Fellowship Offers

The 3MTT NextGen Fellowship is a structured online training programme supported by the Airtel Africa Foundation.

Unlike traditional classroom learning, the programme focuses more on practical skill development, project-based learning, and real-world applications.

Participants are expected to complete learning tasks, assessments, and supervised projects during the training period.

The programme covers several technology-related fields, including:

  • Software Development
  • Data Science
  • Cybersecurity
  • Cloud Computing
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Product Management
  • UI/UX Design

Each participant selects a learning track and receives training related to that field throughout the fellowship.

According to programme details, participants will also have access to mentorship opportunities, group learning activities, innovation challenges, and collaborative projects.

Why Many Young Nigerians Are Turning to Tech Skills

The growing interest in digital training programmes reflects broader economic realities facing many Nigerian youths.

With inflation continuing to affect transportation, feeding, accommodation, and other living expenses, many young people are actively searching for alternative ways to earn income and remain financially stable.

Technology-related jobs, remote work opportunities, and freelancing platforms have become increasingly attractive because they offer flexible income opportunities that are not limited by location.

Education and career analysts say digital skills are gradually becoming essential for young Nigerians hoping to remain competitive in the modern economy.

A university student who spoke to Naijaprimenews said:

“A lot of students are already learning one digital skill or another because everybody is thinking about survival and future opportunities.”

Another graduate added:

“Even if you don’t get a full-time job immediately, digital skills can help you freelance or work remotely for clients.”

Training Format and Learning Activities

The fellowship is delivered entirely online, allowing participants from different parts of Nigeria to join remotely.

Training activities include:

  • Online classes and virtual sessions
  • Practical assignments
  • Guided projects
  • Assessments and progress tracking
  • Mentorship from professionals in the tech industry
  • Group collaborations and innovation challenges

Participants are expected to remain active throughout the programme by attending sessions and completing assigned tasks.

Programme organisers noted that learners who fail to meet participation requirements may lose their place in the fellowship.

What Participants Will Receive After Completion

Participants who successfully complete the training programme will receive certificates and digital badges recognising their participation and acquired skills.

The fellowship also promises practical experience through project work, access to learning communities, and career-related support opportunities.

According to the organisers, some participants may also gain access to internship guidance, networking opportunities, and support for entry-level tech careers.

The certificates and badges can reportedly be added to CVs, LinkedIn profiles, and professional portfolios.
