Chinonso Ikegwu Becomes Licensed Lawyer in Nigeria and United States Within Four Years
A young Nigerian legal scholar, Chinonso Ikegwu, has achieved what many law graduates only dream of. Within four years, she became a licensed lawyer in both Nigeria and the United States.

Academic Foundation at Afe Babalola University
Chinonso began her legal education at Afe Babalola University, where she earned a Bachelor of Laws degree with First Class Honours. Graduating with a First Class in Law is not common in Nigerian universities. It requires consistent academic performance across demanding courses such as Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Law of Contract, and Equity.
Her strong academic record placed her among the top students in her class.
After completing her university degree, she proceeded to the Nigerian Law School. There, she again graduated with a First Class grade. This made her a double first class law graduate, a distinction that set her apart early in her career.
In 2019, she was officially called to the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Being called to the Bar is a significant milestone for every law graduate. It marks the transition from student to legal practitioner.

After careful consideration, she chose to pursue her Master of Laws degree at New York University School of Law. NYU Law is widely recognised for its strong global legal programme and diverse international student community.
She began the LL.M. programme in 2022 and graduated in 2023. Notably, she was one of only three Nigerians admitted into that cohort.
Passing the New York State Bar Examination
Completing an LL.M. in the United States does not automatically qualify a graduate to practise law there. To become licensed, candidates must pass the New York State Bar Examination, one of the most rigorous professional exams in the country.
The exam tests knowledge in areas such as constitutional law, contracts, torts, criminal law, and legal writing. It also requires strong analytical and time management skills.
After completing her studies at NYU, Chinonso sat for the New York Bar Examination and passed.
With that success, she became qualified to practise law in New York. This achievement gave her dual qualification as a legal practitioner in Nigeria and the United States.
